Hurricane has grown their deck boat lineup with the SunDeck 2600, now second in the line of nine SD models. The Hurricane SD 2600 OB (which stands for outboard) slots in just below the SD 2690 but is actually an inch longer, delivers a sizzling speed and there’s very little this versatile model can’t do.

The SD 2600 OB is 26’ 5” LOA and carries an 8’ 6” beam. It weighs around 4,400 pounds dry so it’s a substantial piece of machinery. You can board on either port or starboard via the wide aft platform that also hides a telescoping ladder. Back here you’ll find flip backrests which form either aft-facing jump seats or long forward-facing lounges with lots of storage below and a table in between. A ski pylon is an option so you can enjoy tubing, boarding and skiing.

Just ahead are bucket seats for the driver and companion. At the helm, our test boat had two optional Simrad displays (Garmin is an option) and a Fusion stereo head. (You can also upgrade to the JL Audio premium system.) It also had six speakers plus two optional tower-mounted speakers overhead.

A quick walk through showed 14 cup holders aboard, including four at the aft platform and one with a cooling feature at the helm. The helm also has the optional wireless phone charter and full spectrum RGB lighting control. On the other side, a standard feature that will let you stay out all day (especially with kids) is the head that’s integrated into the console ahead of the companion seat. Large in-floor gel-coated storage for skis, toys and more runs along the centerline.

Onboard Experience

The sun was brutal that day in the desert on the California/Arizona border but we enjoyed a unique cover. Instead of the usual canopy that comes standard, our model had the powered tower with a mesh soft top. This Speedtop fabric is an open weave that still provides SPF 50 and although not waterproof, it’ll keep some of the rain off. It can be used up to 55 mph when running the boat and is heavier than standard canvas which is surprising since half of its surface area is basically air. A side benefit to this mesh is that it ventilates the heat up and through.

A black-framed windshield is standard (upgradable to stainless steel) and once you walk through it, you’re in the open bow with twin long lounges along both sides and an optional filler cushion to form a sun lounge. At the bow, there’s a roller with an anchor just ahead of the opening ground tackle locker. A windlass is optional. The interior of our test boat was finished in Oasis Cognac vinyl with Mocha accents.

Performance

We tested the SD 2600 OB with the single Mercury Verado 400-hp outboard and it’s no slouch. At 6300 rpm, we reached 52.3 mph at wide-open-throttle on the smooth waters of the Colorado River on Lake Havasu. Our best cruise was at 4000 rpm delivering 29.8 mph and burning 2.7 gph. Even idle speed was zippy at 1000 rpm and 4.6 mph. A single outboard is the only propulsion choice but you can opt for different brands. Onboard tankage includes 66 gallons of fuel which will provide just under a 200-mile range at a reasonable cruising speed.

Time to plane was 4.1 seconds and time to 30 mph was 8.2 seconds with four people aboard so this model can get up and go. With the tow pylon, this boat has more than enough power to get big guys out of the water even on a single ski.

Our model had very stiff steering which may have been due to a hydraulic leak so we didn’t get crazy with the turns but when we circled back over our own wake at speed, the hull, which was designed for rough water with a stiffening grid, took it in stride.

All-Around Family Fun

In today’s world of specialization, people tend to buy boats with a specific use in mind. However, with the Hurricane SunDeck 2600 OB, you don’t need to have anything dialed in and that adds flexibility when choosing a boat. This versatile model is perfect for lake cruising, watersports towing, and even a little casting. With an onboard head and sun cover, you can stay out all day, anchoring for lunch, and tapping into some cool tunes and lighting for evening cocktails. Heck, the adventurous could even sleep aboard over a short weekend which translates to a lot of options for just around $125,000 fully loaded.
