Feadship Director and CEO of Royal Van Lent Shipyard, Jan-Bart Verkuyl, is a pioneering figure in the sustainable yachting industry. Verkuyl recently announced on LinkedIn that Feadship's latest innovative approach to promoting sustainability in yachting will be to build a liquid hydrogen fuel-cell yacht, fully certified and ready to set sail.

This forward-thinking yacht will be equipped with a cryogenic fuel tank, capable of storing liquified hydrogen at temperatures as low as -250°C, the most compact storage method for pure hydrogen. With this fuel cell bank, the yacht will be able to maintain a reasonable speed while powering the hotel load during summer conditions. The appeal of hydrogen as a fuel source is on the rise due to its efficient production through electrolysis from electricity.

As the availability of renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power increases, the production of green hydrogen is poised to escalate, providing an effective buffer for renewable energy. Verkuyl's innovative approach to sustainable yachting at Feadship highlights the importance of utilizing environmentally-friendly alternatives in the industry.

Hydrogen Propulsion In Yachting

In recent years, the idea of hydrogen propulsion has gained considerable attention in the world of superyacht building and commercial vessel manufacturing. One of the primary reasons for this growing interest is the fact that hydrogen can be produced efficiently through electrolysis from electricity. This means that as renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power become more readily available, the production of green hydrogen will inevitably increase, effectively providing a buffer for renewable energy.

Sustainable Alternative Power, Virtually Emission-Free

The beauty of hydrogen propulsion is that it emits only water, making it a clean and sustainable fuel source for vessels. As a result, the use of hydrogen fuel cells can significantly reduce the environmental impact of yachting and commercial shipping. By switching to this green technology, the industry can take an important step towards mitigating the impact of climate change.

Looking To The Future

The growing trend of hydrogen propulsion represents a significant shift in the maritime industry towards a more sustainable future. With increasing pressure to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adopt cleaner energy sources, hydrogen propulsion is emerging as a promising solution that has the potential to transform the way we travel by sea. As the industry continues to explore this technology, it is likely that we will see more and more yachts and commercial vessels powered by hydrogen in the coming years.
